Green Home Building: Stuck in the Starting Gates

Things are changing for the better and more Americans have the desire to build green homes. It used to just be for “Tree Huggers”, and now it’s just becoming common sense (kind of like wanting good gas mileage for your car) …that’s the good news. The challenge is, on a national basis, adding green technology to a home costs more than it adds to the resale value. AppraisalsĀ  that new green homes are getting do not reflect the cost of putting it in, and that means that the buyers are having a hard time getting the full financing that they need. Like all change, it has to make it’s way ALL the way through the system, and that can take some time.

There are, however, some bright spots in the country. In Seattle, new homes that are built with green certification sell for 8.5% more per square foot than comparable non-green ones, according to a report form GreenWorks Realty. They also sell 22% faster.

To learn more about this topic, there is a great article in CNN Money that you can read here.
